Music

At St. Mary’s, we offer Music at Junior Cert. and Leaving Cert. to higher level. Both programmes consist of three main elements; Composing, Listening and Performance. At Junior Cert. the Composing aspect teaches students the basic compositional techniques of melody writing and harmony. At Leaving Cert. students further develop these skills. The listening aspect of Junior Cert. and Leaving Cert. music exposes students to music from a wide range of musical genres including; popular music, jazz, liturgical music, traditional Irish and Classical music among others. Students are trained to develop their aural skills through listening to and analysing music.

The performance aspect of both Junior Cert. and Leaving Cert. music is a very popular part of both programmes. Students engage in practical work as an integral part of music class. They sing regularly both solo and as part of the larger class group in preparation for a practical exam which forms a percentage of students’ final grades at both Junior and Leaving Cert. We also teach recorder to our Junior Cert. classes and students also take part in a number of events. They perform at the Opening of the School year Mass, our annual Carol Service, Thanksgiving Ceremony, Graduation Masses and other Liturgies throughout the year. Annually our music students take part in the Emmanuel Concert, at the Helix, Dublin. This is an initiative run by the Dublin Diocese to promote the use of quality liturgical music in our schools and we have been fortunate to have had a number of our students perform as solo vocalists and instrumentalists over the past few years.

St. Mary’s Holy Faith Killester is also involved in a school musical each year, in conjunction with Chanel College, Coolock. The school musical is run as part of our Transition Year programme. Recent productions include "Grease", "High School Musical" and "Guys and Dolls". Our production in 2015 is "The Musicman".
